Sheridan has said he wrote the film, which was inspired by real events, to bring awareness to the overlooked epidemic of violence against Indigenous women. It even ends with a chilling message: "While missing person statistics are compiled for every other demographic, none exist for Native American women. No one knows how many are missing."

Yes, a sequel to *Wind River* is officially on the way. In Nov. 2022, *The Hollywood Reporter* confirmed that Canadian filmmaker Kari Skogland (*The Falcon and the Winter Soldier*) had signed on to direct the next* *installment. Titled *Wind River: The Next Chapter, *it was written by Patrick Massett and John Zinman.

The upcoming movie shifts the spotlight to Chip Hanson (Martin Sensmeier), a supporting character from *Wind River*.

In *Wind River*, the investigation into Natalie's death is hindered by a troubling legal gap. Despite clear signs of foul play, the medical examiner does not classify it as a homicide.

This pushes Banner and Lambert to pursue justice through their own means. Their search leads them to Natalie's boyfriend, Matt Rayburn (Jon Bernthal), a security guard at a nearby oil drilling site.

But Matt, it turns out, is also dead, with the pair finding his naked, mutilated body in the snow. Not long after, they figure out Matt's coworkers at the site are responsible for all the bloodshed.

A flashback reveals that a confrontation occurred when the intoxicated men found Matt and Natalie together. The situation turned vicious, resulting in Natalie being sexually assaulted by Pete (James Jordan) while the rest of the men beat Matt to death.

Natalie managed to escape, running six miles through the snow with light clothing and no shoes. But she succumbed to the extreme cold and harsh conditions.

Back in the present, Banner and a group of officers make a move to arrest those responsible, but the encounter turns violent. Banner is injured in a shootout, and several officers are killed before Lambert is able to intervene and take out the assailants with his rifle.

Pete escapes into the snowy woods, but Lambert tracks him down and ties him up. After Pete admits to his involvement in Natalie and Matt's deaths, Lambert delivers his own form of justice: forcing him to run for his life through the snow, just as Natalie had.

Pete doesn't get far before the cold overtakes him.

The sequel's synopsis reveals escalating terror on the Wind River reservation, where a string of "ritualistic murders remain unsolved."

The FBI is back on the job. This time, they enlist the help of Chip Hanson, now a "newly minted tracker for the U.S. Fish & Game, who becomes embroiled in a desperate and dangerous fight between the authorities, a vigilante and the Reservation he calls home."

*Wind River *ends with Natalie's father, Martin (Gil Birmingham), telling Lambert that Chip called him for the first time in over a year. He's at the local jail, and Martin needs to go pick him up. Before he can, Lambert advises him to be patient, saying, "Suffering's hard on young men. They don't got our practice."

This sets the stage for Chip's return, hinting at a turning point in his life and a growing desire to seek justice for others in the wake of his sister's death.

The sequel will also introduce an impressive ensemble consisting of Jason Clarke (*Oppenheimer*), Scott Eastwood (*Wrath of Man*), Chaske Spencer (*Twilight*), Alan Ruck (*Succession*), Kali Reis (*True Detective: Night Country*), and Tatanka Means (*Killers of the Flower Moon*).

In a January 2025 interview with ScreenRant, Reis revealed she's still waiting for news herself. "You know just as much as I do, unfortunately," she shared with the outlet. "I am really excited about *Wind River 2*, as well. So just keep your eye out for it, and I can't wait to share it with the world."
