- Betty Who came under fire for suggesting that Renée Rapp, who identifies as a lesbian, might one day find the love of her life in a man.
- The Australian singer later apologized to the lesbian community for her comments.
- Rapp slammed Who's remarks, pointing out that she is in a "very loving relationship with a woman."
Renée Rapp has a few words of advice for anyone still speculating about her sexuality: "Just focus on yourself."
In a new interview, the *Mean Girls *star addressed recent controversial comments made by Australian singer Betty Who, who sparked a wave of social media backlash by suggesting that Rapp may still fall in love with a man. Along with slamming that statement, Rapp noted that she is "never surprised" by remarks like Who's because she encounters them often.
"People are always going for lesbians!" she told *Cosmopolitan*. "Somebody's gonna bring my name into the conversation if they want to be in the conversation. So no, it doesn't surprise me at all."
The "Not My Fault" singer did not mention Who by name, but she went on to address her comments head-on.
"I mean, it's just very similar to the whole, 'she hasn't found the right man,'" said Rapp, who identifies as a lesbian and is currently dating fellow singer Towa Bird. "I'm just like, 'What the f---? What makes you think I'm gonna end up with a man?' Also, how about don't talk about me when it comes to a man? I'm very publicly in a very loving relationship with a woman. So I'm not really sure what about that is so blurry."

She continued, "I completely understand that identifying yourself can be really difficult. There is so much pressure when it comes to labeling yourself, but I think that pressure often comes from you. Like, no one ever had a gun to my head and was like, 'Tell me what you are, right the f--- now.' I had a gun to my own head and I was like, 'Tell me what you are, right the f--- now' because I was trying to figure it out, because I didn't know who I was."
Rapp added that she finds it "confusing" when people weigh in on the details of someone's sexuality. "Just focus on yourself," she said. "Just literally focus on yourself. Don't bring my big f---ing lesbian name into your mouth and into this drama."
The controversy started with Who's August 19 appearance on the *Made It Out* podcast, on which she addressed the recent discourse surrounding JoJo Siwa and Fletcher, queer women who recently revealed that they are dating men.

Reneé Rapp admits she's never heard of podcaster Joe Rogan: 'I'm not sure who that is'

"I think it's hard when you become representative of something to other people, and then you change or you are just following your heart, and then that means other people feel that they are not represented anymore," said Who, referencing the negative reactions to Siwa and Fletcher's relationships. "The pressure of that is so immense."
She later brought up Rapp as a hypothetical subject who could wind up in a similar scenario. "I have so much space and love for those women who are probably going through it. Reneé Rapp is like, 'You'll never catch me dating a man.' It's like, 'Go off, queen! I love that for you.' But I also hold space for her in 10 years if she goes, 'Oops, I met the love of my life and it's this man. I didn't mean to.' It's like, that's okay!"
The "Somebody Loves You" singer was then called out for dismissing Rapp's sexuality, and days later she shared an apology to her Instagram Stories.
"I recognize that the language I used poorly articulated my experience and unintentionally reinforced ideas that were harmful or dismissive, particularly toward the lesbian community," she wrote. "That was never my intention, and I'm truly sorry. Everyone's journey is deeply personal, and I shouldn't have spoken in ways that generalized or spoke for others."

She added, "I also recognize that I'm coming from a place of privilege, and I never meant to contribute to prejudice against the community. The LGBTQ+ community is my home; it's where I came alive, found my people, and learned more about love, acceptance, and tolerance on a deeper human level. I will do better."

Rapp, who has been romantically linked to men and women, publicly came out as a lesbian during her January visit to *Saturday Night Live*. She has since admitted that the decision wasn't easy, as "labeling yourself publicly is really, really, really empowering, and also I think can be kind of intimidating."
However, she said identifying as a lesbian ultimately feels "euphoric."
"To come out as a lesbian on *SNL* is, like, pretty c‑‑ty," she said at the time. "I was like, 'I'm going to do it for sure.'"**
