DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran's supreme leader on Wednesday criticized an initial proposal from the United States innegotiations over Tehran's rapidly advancing nuclear program, though he stopped short of entirely rejecting the idea of agreement with Washington. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described the U.S. proposal as "100% against the idea of 'we can,'" borrowing from an Iranian government slogan. He also insisted that Tehran needed to keep its ability to enrich uranium. "If we had 100 nuclear power plants while not having enrichment, they are not usable for us," Khamenei said. "If we do not have enrichment, then we should extend our hand (begging) to the U.S." However, some nuclear power nations get uranium from outside suppliers. Details of the American proposal remain unclear after five rounds of talks between Iran and the U.S. A report by the news website Axios outlined details of the American proposal, the details of whicha U.S. official separately confirmed, include a possible nuclear consortium enriching uranium for Iran and surrounding nations. Whether Iran would have to entirely give up its enrichment program remains unclear, as Axios reported that Iran would be able to enrich uranium up to 3% purity for some time. Reaching a deal is one of the several diplomatic priorities being juggled byU.S. President Donald Trumpand his trusted friend andMiddle East envoy Steve Witkoff. An accord could see the United States lift some of its crushing economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for it drastically limiting or ending its enrichment of uranium. But a failure to get a deal could see tensions further spike in a Middle East on edge overthe Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. Iran's economy, long ailing, could enter a free fall that could worsen the simmering unrest at home. Israel or the U.S. might carry out long-threatened airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. And Tehran may decide to fully end its cooperation with the United Nations' nuclear watchdog and rush toward a bomb.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Images from the election of South Korea's new president, liberalLee Jae-myung, are everything you'd expect to see in one of the world's most vibrant democracies. Peaceful. Orderly. And, because this is South Korea, compulsively eye-catching, with crowds singing raucously along to blaring K-pop, dancers bouncing in closely choreographed sequences, and color-coordinated outfits for the two front-runners and their supporters — blue for Lee, who was inaugurated Wednesday for a single, five-year term, red for the distant runner-up, conservative Kim Moon Soo. What the pictures don't capture is theabsolute turmoil of the past six months, making Tuesday one of the strangest — and, possibly, most momentous --election dayssince the country emerged in the late 1980s from decades of dictatorship. Since Dec. 3, South Koreans have watched, stunned, as an extraordinary sequence of events unfolded: Then-South KoreanPresident Yoon Suk Yeoldeclared martial law, a first since the dictatorship. In response, lawmakers, leaping fences and jostling with heavily armed soldiers, elbowed their way into a besieged parliament to vote the declaration down. Yoonwas then impeachedand removed from office and now, just two monthsafter his fall,another president has taken office. Here is a look at Lee's victory, the startling events that set up the election, and the challenges Lee faces to heal a nation split along a host of political and social fault lines. Where do these divisions come from? They are, in a way, older than the nation. The Korean Peninsula was initially divided into a Soviet-backed north and U.S.-backed south after World War II. The states formalized the division in 1948, and the 1950-53 Korean War made it permanent, dividing the rivals along theDemilitarized Zone, one of the most heavily armed borders in the world. But the tensions go beyond geography. During the long fight for democracy during South Korea's dictatorships, several fractures arose that persist today: the contentions between liberals and conservatives, but also gaps between rich and poor, old and young and men and women. Since the end of dictatorship, over and over the country has seen its democracy tested. By its own leaders. By itsantagonistic neighborto the north. By each new generation's reaction to a tumultuous history of forced geographic division, war, dictatorship, and one of the most breakneck economic turnarounds in world history. Preceding Tuesday's election, thousands of protesters took to the streets, both supporting the deposed Yoon and denouncing him. "Above all, the president must bring unity among a divided and confused public, which was caused by the martial law declaration," Park Soo Hyun, a 22-year-old student, said Wednesday. What can we expect from a Lee administration? Lee's party has a majority in parliament that will presumably allow the new president a freer hand in pushing through liberal legislation, including more funding for welfare programs and policies to address high living costs, joblessness and corruption. Typically, liberals like Lee have been more wary of South Korea's traditional allies, the United States and Japan, than conservatives. They have also often looked for reconciliation with North Korea. The United States sees South Korea as a crucial buttress against China andRussia and North Korea's growing nuclear capabilities. The South hosts nearly 30,000 U.S. troops. Lee, however, will have to find a way to keep his liberal base happy while managing the relationship with U.S.President Donald Trump, whohas threatened Seoul with tariffsand has generally been lukewarm about the importance of the alliance. Lee has also been dogged by a raft of corruption cases, and it's not yet clear how much of a drag those will be on his presidency. "I will make sure there is no more military coup d'état, in which the power entrusted by the people would never be used to intimidate people," Lee said in his victory speech early Wednesday morning, referring to the martial law decree. So is South Korea past the worst or can we expect more turmoil? Experts say it's a little of both. The last half-year has worsened already raw divisions, even as it highlighted the underlying strength of a rough-and-tumble democratic process. "Fierce ideological divisions still infuse politics, which could impede South Korea's chances to grow into a truly mature democracy," Duyeon Kim, a visiting professor at Yonsei University in Seoul, wrote recently for the Council on Foreign Relations. But Tuesday's vote and Wednesday's inauguration signaled a return to a more normal democracy. And even the crisis itself showed the resiliency of South Korea's institutions. A crowd helped lawmakers get past troops and into parliament to overturn the martial law decree. The soldiers who carried out Yoon's orders did so without enthusiasm and didn't use force against the people, John Delury, a Korea expert and visiting professor at John Cabot University, said Tuesday. Korean democracy is in the people's hands, he said, not any one person's, even the new president's. Lee "enters office with a strong mandate. But he is not the savior of democracy," said Delury. "Korean people saved it themselves. Now they are entrusting him not to do any more damage to it for the next five years."

Here's what else to know about today's testimony: Garcia testified that he was so "nervous" about the NDA that he didn't read it all before he signed it. Diddy presented stacks of cash in a brown paper bag, added Garcia, who said he bought a used car with his $30,000 share. Garcia also said he wasn't initially truthful to police when he was asked about the assault. On cross-examination, the defense pointed out the NDA didn't stop Garcia from speaking about it in legal proceedings, a line of questioning presumably intended to undermine the government's potential claim of obstruction of justice. By Anna Hirtenstein and Gilles Guillaume LONDON/PARIS (Reuters) -Dutch car sharing firm MyWheels will plug in the first of 500 grid-connectable Renault EVs to its fleet in the Netherlands this week, expanding the number of vehicles in Europe capable of strengthening the power grid as the technology gains traction. Vehicle-to-grid technology, known as V2G, allows electric vehicles to store power and provide it to the electricity grid at times of peak demand. The technology has been available for several years but only recently became commercially viable after the introduction of smart charging technology and batteries able to sustain intensive usage. The rollout by MyWheels will be the largest V2G car-sharing scheme in Europe and the largest addition of V2G-enabled cars in the region. It follows growing concern about grid stability after a major blackout in Spain and Portugal this year, and sabotage to power supply in southern France during this year's Cannes film festival, which have triggered more interest in a technology that can help balance fluctuating supply and demand, said Kees Koolen, an investor in We Drive Solar, the Dutch producer of the special chargers used in the project. "It feels like we're at a tipping point," said Koolen, who estimated that the project in the Dutch city of Utrecht has cost around 100 million euros ($114 million) to develop. The global V2G market was worth $3.4 billion in 2024, according to Global Market Insights, and is expected to grow by 38% annually between 2025 and 2034 to reach $80 billion. The Netherlands is an early adopter of V2G technology due to ambitious plans to electrify its transport and heating systems while also moving to renewables. Japan's Nissan has also recently supplied dozens of V2G-enabled Leaf and Ariya models to France and Spain. MyWheels says 500 of Renault's V2G-compatible cars, including its electric R5, will be on the road by next year. When not driving, the cars will be plugged into We Drive Solar's bidirectional chargers and the scheme's operators will be paid for electricity absorbed and sold to the grid. Grids have become increasingly unstable with growing electrification and as more intermittent renewable energy is fed into the system. "Our research shows that vehicle-to-grid technology could allow the growing electric vehicle fleet to become a significant asset to the grid, with vast storage potential locked up in electric vehicles," said Madeleine Brolly, advanced transport analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. A key challenge ahead will be standardisation across manufacturers, which will be needed for it to be adopted at scale, she added. Followinga public plea for deportation relief,a young girl with a life-threatening medical condition and her mother will be allowed to remain in the U.S. Deysi Vargas, the mother of the 4-year-old girl, received a notice Tuesday morning saying that her and her daughter's humanitarian parole had been approved for one year, the family's lawyers said. In April, the family unexpectedly received notice from the Department of Homeland Security that their parole and work authorization had been terminated. "If you do not depart the United States immediately you will be subject to potential law enforcement actions that will result in your removal from the United States — unless you have otherwise obtained a lawful basis to remain here," the notice, which was obtained by NBC News, read. The family and their attorneys at Public Counsel, the law firm representing them, talked at anews conferencelast week about what the revocation could mean for the 4-year-old's health. "If they deport us and take away my daughter's access to her specialized care, she will die," Vargas said in her native Spanish. Deysi's daughter, who is being identified only by the initials S.G.V., has short bowel syndrome, which affects the small intestine and causes problems absorbing nutrients from food. As a result, she requires daily treatment to get the proper nutrition, using a portable backpack when she's not home, according to the family and attorneys. The family's lawyers said S.G.V.'s equipment cannot travel outside of the U.S., with few places outside the country able to administer the treatment in the first place. Both S.G.V. and her mother were born in Mexico and entered with the girl's father in July 2023 through the CBP One app, after which the family was granted humanitarian parole. The family's humanitarian parole was set to expire at the end of July, but Vargas was working to get it extended. After the news conference last week, a senior DHS official told NBC News that the family was not "actively being deported" and that the family's May 14 application with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services was "still being considered."

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — The Israeli army said two rockets were fired from Syria into open areas in the Israel-controlled Golan Heights on Tuesday, marking the first time a strike has been launched toward Israel from Syrian territory since the fall offormer Syrian President Bashar Assadin December. Syrian state media reported that Israel shelled the western countryside of Syria's Daraa province after the rocket launch. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K.-based war monitor, also reported Israeli airstrikes that caused "violent explosions" around the city of Quneitra and in the Daraa countryside. A group calling itself the Mohammed Deif Brigades —named after a Hamas military leader killed by an Israeli strike in Gaza last year— claimed the attack in a post on Telegram. The group first surfaced on social media a few days before. "Until now, it's just a Telegram channel. It's not known if it is a real group," said Ahmed Aba Zeid, a Syrian researcher who has studied armed factions in southern Syria. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement that Israel considers "the Syrian president directly responsible for every threat and firing toward the State of Israel" and warned of a "full response" to come "as soon as possible." Israel has been suspicious of the Islamist former insurgents who formed the new Syrian government, led byPresident Ahmad al-Sharaa, and has launched hundreds of airstrikes on Syria and seized a U.N.-patrolled buffer zone on Syrian territory since Assad's fall. A school system in Connecticut that's at the center of an ongoing legal fight over allowing transgender student athletes to participate in competitive girls' sports is being investigated by the Trump administration, the U.S. Department of Education confirmed Tuesday, adding a new flashpoint in the national debate over trans girls' participation in youth sports. James Demetriades, the mayor of Cromwell, said the town's school system could lose nearly $1 million in federal special education funding if the department determines it's in violation ofTitle IX, the federal civil rights law that forbids discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal assistance. The mayor, a Democrat, said Monday the school district would be ineligible for the state's athletic conference if it didn't allow student athletes to compete on sex-segregated sports teams consistent with their gender identity. He said the district is currently following "all applicable state and federal law as well as the rules for the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference," the governing body for secondary school athletics in the state. In an interview on Tuesday, Demetriades said Cromwell currently has "no gender diverse" high school CIAC athletes. "We don't know why Cromwell was targeted for this action," Demetriades said in a statement on Facebook. He said the investigation also includes restroom and locker room usage. CIAC's policy of allowing transgender girls to compete in girls high school sports was first challenged in 2020 by four runners who said they were unfairly forced to race against transgender sprinters from Cromwell and Bloomfield. CIAC argued its policy is designed to comply with a state law that requires all high school students be treated according to their gender identity. It has also said the policy is in accordance with Title IX. While a federal appeals court in 2022 dismissed the plaintiffs' challenge to CIAC's policy, saying they lacked standing and had not been deprived of a "chance to be champions," the suit waslater revivedin 2023 and is currently pending. It could be ready for a trial in 2026. The head of the U.S. Education Department's Office for Civil Rights, Craig Trainor, said in a statement that the investigation was looking at whether Cromwell's policies were "depriving girls and young women of equal athletic opportunities." U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon added that, "This Administration will fight on every front to protect women's and girls' sports." A community of more than 14,000, Cromwell is about 20 minutes south of the capital, Hartford. A rally in support of transgender youth was planned Tuesday evening at Cromwell High School. In 2019, during PresidentDonald Trump's first term, the Office for Civil Rights launched an investigation into the policy in Connecticut that allows transgender high school athletes to compete as the gender with which they identify. It determined the actions of the CIAC, Cromwell and several other communities in Connecticut resulted in "the loss of athletic benefits and opportunities for female student-athletes." Days after taking office for his second term, Trump signed an executive order titled "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports," which states that all funds from educational programs "that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities, which results in the endangerment, humiliation, and silencing of women and girls and deprives them of privacy," will be rescinded. In his post, Demetriades asked state officials to help hold the town harmless from liability and intervene if Cromwell is sued by the Department of Justice. In March, the Department of Education openedan investigation into Portland Public Schools,Oregon's largest school district, over allowing a transgender athlete to compete on a high school girls' track-and-field team.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — In a twist, the state of Florida's top higher education board voted Tuesday against a contract for Santa Ono, who was set to be the next president of the University of Florida. The decision came after growing opposition on the right to Ono's past statements about diversity, equity and inclusion, Covid and transgender rights, among other issues. Under Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida has prided itself on being at the vanguard of the national conservative movement. But the rejection of Ono, the former president of the University of Michigan, put DeSantis in a thorny political position, and it was a notable outcome in a state Republican ecosystem generally defined by donors and influential figures' getting their way. One of DeSantis' longtime biggest political supporters — Mori Hosseini, the billionaire chair of the University of Florida Board of Trustees — strongly backed Ono's bid to become president of the state's flagship university. On the other hand, national conservatives, including Christopher Rufo, an activist whobuilt his reputationfighting racial sensitivity trainings and critical race theory courses;Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., a Trump ally running for governor; and Donald Trump Jr. argued that Ono's past support for DEI policies made him unqualified for the job. "WTF! Have the decision makers at @UF lost their minds!???" Trump Jr.wrote on Xlast month. "This woke psycho might be a perfect fit for a Communist school in California, but how is he even being considered for this role in Florida? "Every single member of the Florida Board of Governors should vote against him!!!" he continued. Two Trump advisers familiar with the issue said his post did not speak for the White House, which was not officially engaged in the fight. Trump Jr.'s post amplifiedone from Rufo, whom DeSantis has praised and whom he appointed to a separate university board in the state in 2023. Rufo's message blasted Ono for a video in which he promoted "equity and inclusion ... embedded in all areas of academic work" when he was president and vice chancellor at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Ono's record on DEI policies, the handling of the Covid pandemic and issues like environmental justice were heavily scrutinized Tuesday at the meeting of the Florida Board of Governors, the state's top education board, which needed to vote to ratify Ono's new contract. Ono said repeatedly that he had "evolved" on those issues at a hearing that lasted nearly four hours. But the board ultimately rejected him in a 10-6 vote, with notable "no" votes from DeSantis allies, including former state House Speakers Jose Oliva and Paul Renner, along with the outgoing leader of the state Education Department, Manny Diaz, whom DeSantis recently appointed to lead the University of West Florida. "There is no way those guys vote against him without getting some signal from the governor," a longtime DeSantis adviser said. "I don't know if anyone expected this, but if you look at the votes, I think that tells you where the governor is at." Four Florida Republicans told NBC News that their understanding was that DeSantis was initially behind Ono but that the national conservative backlash forced him to not fully put his support behind him publicly or make direct calls to the Board of Governors. But behind the scenes, his team was quietly discussing how to give him a push, according to two people familiar with the matter. One of them said DeSantis' chief of staff, Jason Weida, was making calls in support of Ono ahead of the vote. Underscoring the politically sensitive nature of the vote, DeSantis' political operation tried to claim some victory after it. "Santa Ono is OUT,"posted Jordan Schachtel, a newly hired DeSantis political staffer. "The Florida Board of Governors has voted to Reject Ono as President of the University of Florida." "Florida has voted to reject wokeness, DEI, CRT, at our flagship university," he continued. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., also praised the vote, saying it was the "right decision." Donalds, who has Trump's backing in his 2026 bid for governor, was an Ono skeptic from the start. Notably, DeSantis' wife, Casey, is also considering a run for governor, and the two prominent Florida Republicans are seen as being on a political collision course if Casey DeSantis ultimately decides to run. "I give credit to the Florida Board of Governors for standing up for Florida's conservative values," Donalds told NBC News. "Woke has no place in our university system. It's time to restart the presidential search at UF." Other longtime Florida operatives said Donalds and other conservative groups amplifying the fight to the Republican political base nationally helped keep DeSantis out of the conversation in a more public way. "The governor was obviously all in," a DeSantis ally said. "Then Byron Donalds and [the conservative group] Turning Point came out against. The governor in the end does the one thing he knows how to do: run away and protect himself." DeSantis' office did not respond to a request for comment. During the contentious meeting, Ono tried to explain that he has had an "evolution" of thought on issues like DEI and that he was both aligned with and attracted to Florida's brand of governance, which has cracked down on both. "Those sorts of programs will not have a place at the University of Florida," he told the board. Still, it wasn't enough to convince the skeptics on the board. "I really, really want to try to get to a yes," board member Carson Good said. "I can't give a [yes vote], but I wish you the very best and will support you if you win."

Warning issued to North Carolina beach visitors after suspected shark attack

Authorities in North Carolina are investigating a suspected shark attack after a person suffered major injuries swimming along a southern beach in the state,local first responders said. The incident took place May 28 atSunset Beach in Brunswick County, just south of Ocean Isle Beach near the South Carolina state line. Just after 11 a.m., The Sunset Beach Fire Department reported, firefighters and paramedics responded to the beach for a report of a person who suffered a leg injury while swimming near the 31st Street access point. "Upon arrival, Beach Rescue personnel provided medical care to the injured swimmer, who was conscious and alert," Sunset Beach fire Chief Richard Childres said in a press release. The swimmer was taken to a medical facility to be treated for his injuries, Childres wrote in the release. At the time of the release, Childres said, the full extent of the victim's injuries remained "unknown," and medical professionals were "working to assess what caused the injury." On June 3, Sunset Beach fire Captain Paul Brown confirmed to USA TODAY the adult male was a tourist and, according to investigators, the swimmer suffered a leg injury, but could not say one way or another whether a shark was officially responsible for it. Additional information about the incident was not immediately provided by officials. But firefighters were encouraging beach visitors to be cautious. "Marine life, including sharks, are natural inhabitants of these waters, and its crucial to take precaution to minimize potential risk," the release continued. USA TODAY has reached out to Childres for more information. Shark attacks: US led the world in 2024:Where else does danger lurk in the water? If confirmed, the attack could be the state's first reported shark encounter with a human in 2025. According to theInternational Shark Attack File(ISAF), 47 people were bit in an unprovoked attack last year and of them, four fatalities took place, including one in the United States. WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal Bureau of Prisons must continue providing hormone therapy and social accommodations to hundreds of transgender inmates followingan executive ordersigned byPresident Donald Trumpthat led to a disruption in medical treatment, a federal judge ruled Tuesday. U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth said inhis rulinga federal law prohibits prison officials from arbitrarily depriving inmates of medications and other lifestyle accommodations that the bureau's own medical staff has deemed appropriate. The judge said the transgender inmates who sued to block Trump's executive order are trying to lessen the personal anguish caused by their gender dysphoria, the distress that a person feels because their assigned gender and gender identity don't match. "In light of the plaintiffs' largely personal motives for undergoing gender-affirming care, neither the BOP nor the Executive Order provides any serious explanation as to why the treatment modalities covered by the Executive Order or implementing memoranda should be handled differently than any other mental health intervention," the judge wrote. The Bureau of Prisons is providing hormone therapy to more than 600 inmates diagnosed with gender dysphoria. The bureau doesn't dispute that gender dysphoria can cause severe side effects, including depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts, the judge said. The Republican president's executive order required the bureau to revise its medical care policies so that federal funds aren't spent "for the purpose of conforming an inmate's appearance to that of the opposite sex." Lamberth's ruling isn't limited to the plaintiffs named in the lawsuit. He agreed to certify a class of plaintiffs consisting of anyone who is or will be incarcerated in federal prisons. The lawsuit's named plaintiffs include Alishea Kingdom, a transgender woman who was prescribed hormone therapy injections and approved to receive social accommodations, including women's undergarments and cosmetics. Kingdom was denied her hormone shot three times after Trump signed his order, but she had it restored roughly a week after she sued. Her access to feminine undergarments hasn't been restored, according to the judge's ruling. "In Ms. Kingdom's case, there is no indication at all that the BOP means to leave her hormone therapy in place long-term; indeed, as noted above, she was informed by BOP personnel that the decision to resume her treatment was a consequence of this litigation itself, raising the specter that her treatments might be discontinued as soon as the litigation has concluded," Lamberth wrote. Trump's order also directed the Bureau of Prisons to ensure that "males are not detained in women's prisons." In February, however, Lamberth agreed to temporarily block prison officials from transferring three incarcerated transgender women to men's facilities and terminating their access to hormone therapy. The judge said there's no evidence Trump or prison officials considered the harm the new polices could do to transgender inmates. "The defendants argue that the plaintiffs have not alleged irreparable harm because they are all currently receiving hormone medications. But it suffices to say that all three plaintiffs' access to hormone therapy is, as best the Court can tell, tenuous," Lamberth wrote. The plaintiffs are represented by attorneys from the Transgender Law Center and the American Civil Liberties Union. Lamberth, a senior judge, was nominated to the bench by President Ronald Reagan, a Republican, in 1987.

DETROIT (AP) — A Chinese scientist entered the U.S. last year with a toxic fungus stashed in his backpack, federal authorities said Tuesday as they filed charges against him and a girlfriend who worked in a lab at the University of Michigan. The pathogen is known as Fusarium graminearum, which can attack wheat, barley, maize and rice and sicken livestock and people, the FBI said in a court filing in Detroit. The FBI said a scientific journal describes it as a "potential agroterrorism weapon." Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, were charged with conspiracy, smuggling, making false statements and visa fraud. "The alleged actions of these Chinese nationals, including a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party, are of the gravest national security concerns," U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr. said. Jian appeared in court and was returned to jail to await a bond hearing Thursday. An attorney who was assigned only for her initial appearance declined to comment. In July 2024, Liu was turned away at the Detroit airport and sent back to China after changing his story during an interrogation about red plant material discovered in his backpack, the FBI said. He initially claimed ignorance about the samples but later said he was planning to use the material for research at a University of Michigan lab where Jian worked and where Liu previously worked, the FBI said. The FBI said authorities found a scientific article on Liu's phone that was titled, "Plant-Pathogen Warfare under Changing Climate Conditions." A week before arriving in the U.S., according to investigators, Liu exchanged messages with Jian, who said, "It's a pity that I still have to work for you." The FBI said Liu replied: "Once this is done, everything else will be easy." Months later, in February, FBI agents visited Jian at the campus lab. She said, "100% no," when asked if she had been assisting Liu with the pathogen at the lab. The FBI said it found a signed statement on her phone expressing her support for the Communist Party of China. Messages between the two in 2024 suggest that Jian was already tending to Fusarium graminearum at the campus lab before Liu was caught at the Detroit airport, the FBI said. The university does not have federal permits to handle it. The U.S. does not have an extradition treaty with China, which makes Liu's arrest unlikely unless he returns.

NEW YORK – As a reality TV star in her own right,Ariana Madixis uniquely qualified to host a show like"Love Island USA." In the reality competition returning Tuesday, June 3, for Season 7 (streaming daily this week on Peacock), singles attempt to couple up andcompete for a $100,000 prize. "It's not easy to put yourself out there in a dating sense, but let alone a dating world that the entire world is watching," Madix tells USA TODAY of the contestants on "Love Island USA." Madix, the 39-year-old, perhaps best known for her run on Bravo's"Vanderpump Rules,"knows about fearlessness in love. "They're so brave. I always hope that they have fun, too. Because that was something I loved about last season," she said. "There was drama, but there was such beautiful friendship as well." Drama melding with friendship is also an apt description of the precursor to her very public halt from "Vanderpump" when Madix's boyfriend of nine years,Tom Sandoval, cheated on her with another one of their co-stars,Rachel "Raquel" Leviss. Dubbed the"Scandoval,"it played out while Bravo cameras were rolling for the TV show in 2023. Madix has a front row seat to all of it. The actress and Broadway performer returns to "Love Island USA" after hosting Season 6. Madix reveals that on a typical day in Fiji, she'll work out at the hotel gym for three hours. Then she heads to the makeup chair: Madix says her hair and makeup typically take about two hours. The glam team saves the last 15 minutes until they know for sure that Madix will be heading in to film. "We watch the live feeds of what's going on in the villa, which is really fun," Madix dishes of how she and the team spend their time before the host is needed. "You can change the channels between the groups of people and what they're talking about. I love gossip and I love to eavesdrop, so it's perfect for me." Madix is very happy with her career at the moment. She reflects that before her role on "Vanderpump Rules," the actress would hold down "four or five different jobs at once" to pay rent. "Now that I'm able to have jobs that I really enjoy doing, I get to live my dream out," she says, noting she still gets to try different things, from authoring a cocktail book to running a restaurant (she co-owns the West Hollywood spot Something About Her with fellow "Vanderpump" alum Katie Maloney). "I really appreciate when people just let it happen and don't try to box (other) people in, because I find that really stifling in a lot of ways." Amid her various projects, Madix won't rule out a return to Bravo. But there's a catch. "It's hard to say what that would be," she says of a show that could get her back on the network. "I think for me to be in that type of position where I am putting myself out there, I would want to be in charge. I would definitely want to be executive producer. "This is a theory that claims President Biden was cloned and replaced by a robot which, first of all, aren't robots and clones two entirely different things?" Kimmel asked.
