Forget Shoeless Joe Jackson, now there's Shoeless Simon Stone and his crew.

Simon Stone, co-writer and director of the new Netflix thriller, *The Woman in Cabin 10*, had to forgo footwear, along with the rest of his crew, for much of the making of the film.

The majority of the film, which stars Keira Knightley as an investigative reporter who finds herself mired in a deadly conspiracy, takes place aboard a luxury yacht in the North Sea. To make that environment feel real, they filmed on several actual yachts — but the process came with a lot of rules.

"It was massively challenging," Stone tells *. *"We weren't allowed to bring any film equipment on board apart from the cameras. Whatever we brought on board had to be handheld. So we did have some lights, but they were in hands. We didn't have lighting stands. We weren't allowed to put anything on the ground."

Those restrictions extended to the crew's feet as well. "The floors are worth millions," Stone explains, noting that he was sure to include this peculiar detail in the movie itself. "I put the thing about them having to take their shoes off at the beginning of the film because that was what we went through every time we visited one of these yachts. The idea that you spend 150 million on a yacht with floors that you need to take your shoes off on, and everyone has to walk around in socks is hilarious."

For Stone and his team, it also helped enhance the sense of paranoia and that of outsiders looking in that defines the film. "We were all walking around in our socks with cameras on our shoulders and recording equipment hanging off of us," he says, with a laugh. "The whole thing was like we were making a guerilla movie in a war zone, and we were on the most luxurious yacht.

"The situation was quite hilarious," Stone continues. "But it fed into your sense of not belonging in that environment because we weren't millionaires being hosted as millionaires. We were people who could destroy a boat, and we were being guarded, looked after, and supervised in that regard. That was good because we wouldn't have been able to afford the repair check."
