We saw the War of the Five Kings on *Game of Thrones*, we're currently witnessing the Targaryen civil war on *House of the Dragon*, but now it's time to begin the tales of Dunk and Egg.

*A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* trailer arrives today out of a New York Comic Con panel with the main stars and creators of the next *Thrones* spinoff series. Unlike the past two dramas, this one ditches the lords, ladies, kings, queens, dragons, and dire wolves for the more humble story of a wandering hedge knight and his diminutive squire.

Author George R. R. Martin, who serves as co-creator and executive producer, joined *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* co-creator and showrunner Ira Parker, as well as their two main stars, Peter Claffey (Ser Duncan "Dunk" the Tall) and Dexter Sol Ansell (Egg), at the Manhattan-based fan convention to preview the show.

Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas — "The Hedge Knight," "The Sworn Sword," and "The Mystery Knight" — serve as the source material, with season 1 adapting the first in this collection.

After Dunk, a simple-minded by noticeably tall squire, buries his recently deceased knight, Ser Arlan of Pennytree (Danny Webb), he sets off to compete in a tourney to earn some coin. Along the way, he encounters a young, bald boy named Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who's determined to serve as Dunk's squire. Upon arrival at the Ashford Meadow tourney, Dunk encounters a unique assemblage of characters, including a few Targaryens. The events that transpire there will have ripple effects on Westeros.

** previously revealed that *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* won't have an opening title sequence, which has become a staple of its TV predecessors. This is aligned with the smaller scale of the show, which will have six episodes for season 1 instead of the typical eight.

"All decisions came down to Dunk, trying to channel the type of person he is into every aspect of this show, even the title sequence," Parker told EW. "The title sequences on the original [*Game of Thrones*] and *House of Dragon* are big and epic and incredible. Ramin Djawadi's score is orchestral and large and beautiful. That's not really Dunk's M.O. He's plain and he's simple and he's to-the-point. He doesn't have a lot of flash to him."

*A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* will premiere in January on HBO Max. Watch the trailer above.
